Elastic therapeutic tape applied with clinical precision — supporting muscles and joints, reducing pain, and enabling you to move freely while you heal.
What it is
Kinesio tape is a thin, elastic cotton tape with a heat-activated acrylic adhesive. Unlike rigid strapping tape, it stretches with your skin — providing dynamic support without restricting range of motion.
When applied correctly by a trained physiotherapist, the tape creates a gentle lifting effect on the skin, decompressing the tissue below. This reduces pressure on pain receptors, improves circulation, and provides proprioceptive feedback to the muscles and joints.
At C7Physio we use kinesio taping as part of a broader treatment plan — not a standalone solution. The tape extends the effect of hands-on therapy between appointments.
Kinesio tape (elastic) is different from rigid strapping tape. Rigid tape is used for acute immobilisation; kinesio tape is for ongoing support during movement and activity. The application technique — tension, direction, anchor points — determines effectiveness.
Tape colours (all same properties)
Colour has no clinical significance — it's a patient preference. All colours have identical elasticity and adhesion.

Clinical applications
Lifts the skin to reduce pressure on nociceptors (pain receptors) and alter sensory input to the nervous system, providing relief during movement.
Fan-cut applications improve lymphatic drainage and reduce post-injury or post-surgical swelling more rapidly than compression alone.
Applied with appropriate tension, tape can activate underused muscles (e.g. glute med, lower trapezius) to restore healthy movement patterns.
Applied across the upper back and scapular region to retrain posture during daily activities — effective for desk workers and forward head posture.
Supports injured joints during return-to-sport without restricting motion. Many athletes wear tape for proprioceptive feedback rather than mechanical support.
Scar management, oedema reduction, and proprioceptive support in the early return-to-function phase after orthopaedic surgery.

Application process
We assess the area, determine the correct technique (facilitation, inhibition, correction, or oedema), and clean the skin. No lotions or oils on the skin.
You're positioned so the target tissue is on stretch — ensuring the tape has the correct tension relative to the muscle and joint when at rest.
Tape is cut to the appropriate pattern and applied with clinical tension (0–100% stretch depending on the goal). Anchors are applied without stretch.
We rub the tape to activate the adhesive with heat. You can shower, sweat, and exercise with the tape on. Remove after 3–5 days by pulling slowly.

With proper application and skin prep, kinesio tape lasts 3–5 days. You can shower, swim, and exercise with it on. Pat dry after showering — don't rub. Remove earlier if you experience skin irritation.
The evidence is mixed on some claims, but clinical and patient-reported outcomes for pain, oedema reduction, and proprioceptive feedback are consistently positive. At C7Physio we use it as one tool within a broader plan — not as a standalone cure.
No — that's the key difference between kinesio tape and rigid strapping tape. Kinesio tape is elastic and moves with your skin, allowing full range of motion while providing dynamic support.
You can buy kinesio tape at pharmacies, but correct application requires specific training. The direction, tension, cut pattern, and anchor points all affect the outcome. Incorrect application can cause skin irritation or be clinically ineffective.
Avoid kinesio tape over open wounds, active skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis), areas of fragile or damaged skin, or if you have a known adhesive allergy. Do a small skin test first if you've had reactions to medical tape before.
Kinesio taping is an add-on applied during your physiotherapy session. Your therapist will discuss whether it's appropriate for your condition before applying.
